Is this grayed out item on the machine's control panel or within the printer driver on computer? If on the control of the machine, it means that some item has been selected that is incompatible with stapling.
The machine will 'tell' what conflicting item is currently selected when the grayed out staple item is depressed. Across the top of the display, a message will explain why the staple choice cannot be made. This will allow changing whatever setting is causing the conflict.
If the grayed out item is within the printer driver, this means that the driver needs to be properly configured to 'know' the correct finisher that is physically connected to the machine. First print the Configuration page (User Tools, Printer Features, List/Test Print tab, Configuration Page. Once this is in hand, locate System Reference, Attached Equipment and note the item designated as SR.
This is the finisher. The driver then needs to be configured to 'know' that this item is connected to the machine.
This is done by going into the Printer Properties, then to the Accessories tab and selecting the finisher identified on the Config page. The link and screenshot below should be helpful with this.
