Hello everyone! I've searched through articles here for a while but I've finally found myself in need of some specific knowledge on the HR215 (or even just close up pics!). Between my mom and I, we've been the only owner of a 94 HR215 SXA. It's worked flawlessly for all these years but just recently has gone downhill. I'm pretty sure it started out as normal wear from all the years of use, but it no longer starts at all. The only two issues that existed prior were an engine 'up and down' rev that would just rev high, then down lower and repeat.
It would also shut off when you would move the throttle to slow, so it always remained on the highest throttle setting. After my last mow, it refuses to fire up unless I put gas in the cylinder, or tilt the mower on its side. It will start on first pull then rev really high and then shut off. Here are the things I've tried:. Cleaned the carb.
Checked the float/needle. Checked/cleaned the spark plug (only about 10 hours on it). Messed with (and potentially further screwed up) linkage The last item is where I believe the issue is. After taking the air cleaner housing off and observing the linkage movement when I moved the throttle from off all the way to Choke, I noticed that the choke flap was not even moving. After bending the choke rod a bit, the choke now moves, but I noticed that the throttle flap doesn't appear to be moving completely. I've studied the springs and linkage rods that go into motion and I have to be missing a spring or some part (can't really tell from the diagrams I've seen) because everything seems VERY loose when I turn the throttle to Off position.
Almost to the point of a couple springs detaching by themselves. The only way I can get the throttle to move on the carb is by 'helping' the throttle arm forward. I don't see which spring supports this movement. If anyone with an HR215 could please let me know what exactly happens as far as positioning when you go between fast and choke i.e. At choke setting, choke flap is counter-clockwise all the way, while throttle is at 100%, etc. OR could possible take some close up pictures of the linkage and the springs that would really help me out. It's possible a spring came off but it doesn't seem like it when I try to compare to the control diagrams I've seen.
Drivers manual pa in chinese. Here are a couple pics of the mower. Sorry for the length, I just wanted to make sure I put everything I know up here. Thanks in advance! This chart will show you the innards of your carb. There is a little black plug under the idle adjustment screw that covers an air passage (#2) that gets stuffed up, that can cause the surging you described. You have to remove the idle adjustment screw, then carefully pry the oval shaped plug out to shoot cleaner into that passage.
Watch the video for cleaning the GX series of carbs here. It's under service, then service movies(or maybe it's videos) I have a pdf of the service manual for the GXV140 engine that would describve the proper adjustment for your carb and cables, if you'd want it, but I'd have to end it to an email. Hope that helps. Quick update on the mower. I received the new linkage and springs and swapped everything out.
I can tell a lot of the springs were pretty wore out, but once I got to the last spring which connects the throttle arm to the lever with the throttle cable, I would tell there is still a problem. Can anyone tell me if the throttle butterfly on the carb should always stay in the 'closed' position like the choke butterfly does with it's spring? This is the only problem I see left. I can move the throttle to Fast and choke with no issues, but when I turn it down, there is nothing to help the butterfly move back to the slow or even off position. I've snapped a few more pics before and after the spring I was talking about.
Did the service manual help at all?Yes thank you! I was able to adjust the throttle cable correctly and get other important details like fuel mixture default position etc. I should have my new carb in the next couple days. The old one had some rust inside and the first time I took it apart the main jet was really tough to get out and part of it broke where the slot is. I'm positive with the rust, the other parts are in bad shape. It is 17 years old and on several occasions it has sat and wasn't properly prepped before that. I'm pretty sure I'll be in good shape with the new one.
The control linkage is all new now, and with the carb and an oil change I should get many more hours out of this. I just received the new carb today and I can tell you exactly what the problem was before I even put this on. I noticed that the rod from the choke to the governor seemed really awkward direction wise. It wouldn't really move much even after bending (the old rod) quite a bit. It just never lined up properly.
Well, it appears that part of the governor that sticks out to hold it in the return position broke off. It must have been a clean break because I didn't notice on the old one and couldn't tell about that missing 1/8' plastic section. So the choke was turned passed the stopping point to a negative position and could never be opened enough. I have no doubts that after putting this on, I should be back in business. Thanks again to all of you for the help. I'll post some old/new pics so you guys can see exactly what happened, and hopefully it will help someone else out.
So after the carb installation, I used the manual to properly adjust all cables, along with the fuel mixture. The idle I am just doing by ear since I don't have any proper tools to get a real reading. It never used to remain running when moving to the slow position, I would have to leave the throttle right in between Fast and Choke.
Now it ran perfectly for a complete mow in the front yard. But that is where it starts to go the wrong way. After using the mower cold, for about 25 minutes or so, it starts revving up and down then eventually dying.

If I let it sit for 10 minutes. It will fire right up for another couple minutes. I did a little research and most advice points to the fuel mixture, but I've adjusted that numerous times.
I do need to order an air filter since mine is disintegrating, but I would think if this was the root issue it would run bad even immediately after starting. Lastly I've heard that an air leak could cause this issue (it will remain running without revving longer with Choke on). This kind of makes sense to me since A. If the mower is hot there could be movement between metal/seals and B.sigh.
I didn't get new carb gaskets with the new one. After removing and reinstalling so many times that seems most likely to me but I wanted to run it by you guys to get some feedback. Gaskets are cheap so I'll probably just order them along with the air filter and see if that does the trick. Hello everyone, i have a Honda HR215 hx engine # GXV140 it's a 1989, and it wont start, new spark plug, new gas, filter is so so, tried starting it, and i took out the plug, and it didn't seem wet from gas, so i tried the trick with a teaspoon of gas in the plug hole, didn't start either. I don't have the owners manual, if someone would have it, that would be great! But still need your expertise to help solve that trouble.
I know nothing about lawnmower, so technical word or parts, i might have to ask what is it! Thanks in advance for your help.
