Social Work Licensing Guide How to Become Licensed as a Social Worker Social work licensure protects the public by ensuring that social workers have the proper education and training to provide ethical and competent services. As a regulated profession, licensure for social workers is common practice across the US. Other states only grant licenses to master’s level social workers. In most states, there is no on-the-job training or work experience required to become a Licensed Bachelor of Social Work. Some states require additional education in certain topics such as social work ethics. Generally, there is no supervised work experience required post-graduation to become a Licensed Master of Social Work.
Candidates can obtain this license immediately upon graduation from a CSWE accredited MSW program with successful completion of all necessary testing and course work. Licensed Master Social Workers work in a wide variety of settings including schools, hospitals, nonprofit organizations, and human service agencies. Licensed Master Social Workers often progress into management roles and can provide a wide variety of services to individual clients, groups and communities. In some states, the Licensed Master of Social Work is the highest level of licensure available for social workers interested in providing non-clinical services.
Most master’s level social workers interested in clinical work obtain an LMSW after graduation and then look for a job offering the appropriate supervised experience in preparation for seeking a clinical license in the future. In states offering higher levels of licensure for non-clinical social workers, LMSWs often pursue opportunities to gain non-clinical work experience in preparation for the next licensure level. Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Generalist (LMSW-AG) To become a Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Generalist (often abbreviated LMSW-AP, LMSW-AG, LISW, or LMSW-M) state licensing boards most often require two years of supervised non-clinical social work experience in addition to completing all of the requirements for the LMSW. Both LMSWs and LMSW-Advanced Generalists must obtain a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE accredited MSW program, pass the ASWB Advanced Generalist Exam and complete any additional exams and coursework required by their state’s board of social work examiners. In most states, the distinction between Licensed Master Social Workers and LMSW-Advanced Generalists is the additional is the completion of two years of supervised non-clinical experience.
The LMSW-Advanced Generalist license designates licensees as experienced social workers who do not provide clinical services. Not all states offer the Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Generalist licensure level but it is commonly regarded as the highest level of licensure available for non-clinical social workers.
Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) If you are interested in a career as a Clinical Social Worker, you must obtain a clinical social work license (often abbreviated as LCSW, LICSW, or LMSW-C). Licensed Clinical Social Workers hold master’s degrees in social work from CSWE-approved MSW programs, pass the Clinical ASWB Examination and complete any additional exams and coursework required by the state’s board of social work examiners. In order to obtain a clinical license, social workers must also complete at least two to three years (depending on local requirements) of supervised clinical social work. Because LCSWs are able to practice independently, they are often found in private practice settings as well as schools, hospitals, and community mental health agencies. Educational Requirements for Social Work Licensure The first step in obtaining any social work license is seeking the required education. To become a Licensed Bachelor of Social Work, you must receive a bachelor’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited college or university. Depending on your state licensing board, there may be some exceptions allowing social work licensure for human service professionals with alternate bachelor degrees. The Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) is a four year degree that meets the college or university’s requirements for all undergraduate students including traditional liberal arts and social science classes. Undergraduates, who major in social work, may take classes in case management, social justice, human behavior and social welfare policy and services to gain an understanding of social work.
Beyond the classroom, BSW programs provide undergraduates the opportunity to gain experience in the field as supervised interns at local hospitals, nonprofits, schools and social service agencies. To become a Licensed Master Social Worker, a Licensed Master Social Worker-Advanced Generalist, or a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, you must obtain a master’s degree in social work from a CSWE-accredited MSW program. A traditional full-time MSW program lasts two years, however students who have received a BSW may be eligible for advanced standing. Advanced standing allows social workers to complete an MSW in as little as one year. Some students choose to complete a five year program which includes both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in social work.
Bachelor Professional Studies
All CSWE-accredited MSW programs follow a similar curriculum including both clinical and non-clinical components, combining classroom education with field experience. Depending on your state’s licensing board’s requirements, there may be additional educational requirements for social work licenses. For example, some states require candidates for licensure to complete additional coursework in topics such as social work ethics, substance abuse, child abuse or cultural competence. There is no system of reciprocity for social work licenses across states. However, most states allow license applicants to transfer their ASWB examination scores from one state to another. Also, applicants can often prove that they have met the supervised work experience requirement for a new state license by documenting previous supervised work experience from another state.
Because requirements for each social work license vary by state, there may be additional requirements for applicants moving from one state to another. I can't believe more people don't point how funny it is. I should mention this book is a lot of offense; but where it differs is the self-defense approach in dating. Streamlining your time. It concentrates as much time on who not to date, what not to do, as well as the ultimate defense in dating; setting up asset protection to protect yourself in divorce.
The most interesting section was the psychoanalysis of the various female personalities, and role-playing styles for approaching/dating each. It has me reliving dates with half a dozen girls, as well as half a dozen I didn't want to date, but couldn't get rid of. He has a very dry, witty way of making you think, and seeing your mistakes from the past and what to do in the future. Girls all have some type of wall they put up. It's strange; they are so programmed with their you-go-grrl childish nonsense of blowing out guys.
Even the men they are very attracted to rarely get anywhere unless the girl is in the mood. (or trying to show off to her posse). I realize it is just hiding from their insecurity, but men could sure use advice on dealing with this obstacle. The book gives great tips into creating these openings, by paying attention to her personality type, and role-playing to her style, as opposed to treating all girls the same. I'm now able to get past the wall much easier and am closing like a champ. Plus, it's such a confidence booster now that I have that added intellectual edge, I find the success attitude just feeds on itself.
By knowing who to date and not to date, I eliminate all those worthless dates. More importantly, I never get trapped in relationships I can't get out of, because I know better than to get involved in them in the first place. I don't put so much pressure on myself now, and the 'whatever' attitude is attracting them like flies. It's nice to be in control.

I imagine the reasons can be found in the dating landscape with little difficulty. I have numerous colleagues who are divorced and feel they were fleeced by a pre-ordained 3 year plan. I imagine at least half of them have indeed been rolled. The first section is good social marketing advice on make yourself more attractive to the ladies - social status, attitude and persuasive conversation. The middle part could have been 20 pages shorter and worked great.
It went into too much psychoanalysis detail about the different types of women, traits, habits, desires. Some of the info was really good. Some a bit harsh or questionable. The humorous tone popped in and out and at times and was spot on.
The section on asset protection is worth its weight in gold (see above), but also lagged for me. It was far too detailed and I got lost in the financial jargon. It doesn't apply to me right now, so I lost interest quickly. Overall, many written points almost mirror the words spoken by an increasing number of my male friends.
The changing social dynamic and mindset of the 30ish modern female divorcee in the dating game can be harsh. To see it written down in crude but very real terms made me laugh out loud. I have told my friends to look out for this book, for this alone.

This has very specific information you can custom tailor to your needs, great preliminary reading to set up Asset Protection guide pre-marriage. Almost everyone has heard about the concept, but actually knowing how to set it up is a whole other ballgame. The explanations are very easy to read, without bogging you down with a lot of legalese. It covers multiple scenarios and solutions.
From what I've read, you need at least 2 entities, which are surprisingly inexpensive considering the benefits (half your net worth). Whether you have a lot of property, investments, business equipment, high risk profession, or just have valuable toys or investment collectibles, you will find answers to each. In this day an age, a robber could trip and break his leg on your lawn sprinkler and sue you. Even guys with just 50-100K needs this stuff. Another great thing covered here is showing how self-employed men 'cram down their salary'. Very valuable information, since potential alimony is based on that. This book has made the rounds at the office, with a lot of guys going around quoting some of the funniest lines from the book.
